Sixty-seven people who work for the Moncton gaming company IGT are being laid off, following an acquisition by GTECH, which has adopted the IGT name.

Robin Drummond, IGT's senior vice-president for Canada, says employees were notified on Tuesday.

The layoffs are part of a move to centralize manufacturing in Nevada.

'It's really light, light manufacturing, it's assembly more than heavy manufacturing of the VLTs and slot machines that have been manufactured in Moncton for the last several years,' said Drummond.

A plant in Rhode Island is also being affected by the changes.

The Moncton employees have received a working notice, which means they will continue to work until production is ramped down sometime between September and December.

'The vast majority of the jobs are staying in Moncton. The 67 employees affects about 14 per cent of our workforce,' said Drummond.

Many remaining employees work in the tech sector in game and software development and quality assurance, for example.

IGT started in Moncton as SPIELO, a supplier of VLTs and other gaming machines.

In 2004, SPIELO was bought by GTECH, a Rhode Island-based lottery technology company. In 2006, an Italian lottery operator, Lottomatica, bought GTECH.

Then seven years later, the entire organization, including Moncton's SPIELO, was rebranded under one name: GTECH.

Earlier this month, when GTECH acquired Nevada-based IGT, the entire company became known as IGT.
